What usually turns out to be wrong

Most website problems aren't the problem people think they are.

Twenty-plus years of building and rescuing New Zealand websites means we've seen the same handful of causes over and over. Here are three of them, in case you recognise yours.

A slow store usually isn't short of server. Most WooCommerce sites that crawl under load are running a plugin that queries the whole product table on every page render. That's a two-hour fix, not a hosting upgrade — and moving to a bigger plan would have hidden it for another six months.

"The site went down" is usually a certificate. Nine times in ten the server never stopped. An SSL certificate expired, or a DNS record was edited by someone who has since left. Both are five-minute fixes if you know where to look, and a lost weekend if you don't.

The enquiry form broke a month ago. Contact forms fail silently after plugin updates — the page still says "thank you", the mail never sends. Nobody notices until someone rings to ask why they were ignored. We test forms after every update for exactly this reason.
